- Hearings Commissioner appointment - Helping Shape Regional Environmental Policy
Kohu Strategy & Planning is excited to reveal that Puawai, has been appointed to the Hearings Panel for the Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Natural Resources Plan(NRP) change. This initiative is key to advancing the region’s environmental management and sustainability practices. The Natural Resources Plan aims to integrate new national directions and address key resource management issues, ensuring the protection and sustainable use of the coast, land, water, and air. The NRP change focuses on implementing the Wellington Regional Growth Framework and recommendations from Te Awarua-o-Porirua (TAoP) and Te Whanganui-a-Tara (TWT) Implementation Programmes. These are essential for managing discharges, land use, and natural hazards to prevent degradation and pollution. The first of four hearings has commenced this week (04/11/2024), with 4 further Hearings scheduled throughout 2025. - Coastal Adaptation
In 2022 The New Zealand Coastal Society – Te Hunga Takutai o Aotearoa (NZCS) released a special publication that focused on adapting to coastal change and hazard risk. The report addressed the challenges of sea-level rise and its impact on coastal areas. It emphasizes the importance of adaptation and the need for proactive measures to mitigate these effects. It highlighted the unique nature of coastal environments, and the long-term commitment required to manage sea-level rise, also discussing the various approaches to adaptation, including dynamic adaptive planning and nature-based solutions. The publication underscores the collaborative efforts of experts and stakeholders in developing effective strategies and the critical role of monitoring and anticipatory adaptation in ensuring the resilience of coastal communities. Puawai contributed to the publication by providing insights into work being done between the 4 Northland Councils and tangata whenua in Te Tai Tokerau. (Page 45)
- Auckland Light Rail - what might have been...
Kohu Strategy & Planning Limited(KSP) were fortunate to be part of the successful bid by the Aurecon & Arup alliance for the Auckland Light Rail project. KSP were proud to have been a part of the Auckland Light Rail project, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing Auckland’s mass transit system. Although the project did not proceed to completion, our involvement in the planning and consent phases allowed us to contribute significantly to the vision of a modern, connected city. Puawai’s role as the Māori Urban Planning Lead provided expert consultancy services throughout the planning & engagement process , ensuring that the project’s goals aligned with sustainable urban development and efficient transportation solutions The Auckland Light Rail project was a landmark endeavour that sought to connect the city centre with key areas such as Māngere and the airport, promising to reshape Auckland’s public transport landscape. Our participation in this project underscores our commitment to supporting large-scale infrastructure developments that drive urban growth and improve quality of life. - Te Mana o Te Wai in Te Tai Tokerau
Kohu Strategy and Planning Limited(KSP) was delighted to collaborate with Pattle Delamore Partners(PDP) and the Tangata Whenua Water Advisory Group (TWWAG) to create the Stage 2 Recommendation Report, which supports the implementation of Te Mana o Te Wai in Te Tai Tokerau. Finalised in 2023, the report, titled Ngā Roimata o Ngā Atua: The Tears of Ranginui and Papatūānuku , will contribute to the Freshwater Plan Change process currently being drafted by the Northland Regional Council. This report aims to recognise and provide for Tangata Whenua rights, interests, and responsibilities concerning the Freshwater Plan Change, guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori. - Mass Rapid Transit Corridor Study | Auckland Council
CC2M mass rapid transit corridor study was an investigation in to the social, cultural, environmental and economic issues and opportunities for mass rapid transport along the city centre to Māngere corridor. Designed as a future spatial plan for Auckland Council to inform future planning responses in the area. At the time of the Study Puāwai was a Principal Planner at Auckland Council and lead the investigation of the Corridor Study with a number of planners and urban designers. The Study was undertaken as a directive from Auckland Council committee. It was an information gathering exercise that has recently been used by the Light Rail Unit to understand further issues and opportunities for a mass rapid transit system in and along the Corridor.
- Whangārei District Council Growth Strategy | Te Rautaki Whakatipu o Te Kaunihera ā Rohe o Whangārei.
Delivering outcomes for and with Māori. The Growth Strategy sets out the 30 year strategic direction for the council over the short, medium and long term. Puāwai lead the development of the Māori outcomes chapter for the Growth Strategy which identifies key focus areas and actions. The chapter was co-designed with iwi and hapū representatives from the District, and will be monitored over time.
